Major Storm Restoration
36 credit hours. Started taking electrical and energy production/distribution classes in Spring of 2013. In May of 2013 began hands on training. Reading blueprints and schematics, working with de-energized lines, primarily using a bucksqueeze as well as free climbing. Sagging wire, changing insulators, hang, make-up and troubleshoot transformers and powerbanks, remove and hang crossarms, splicing cable and down line repair scenarios, removing and setting poles, complete line build and takedown, changing fuses, long-sticking, grounding, working with a digital multimeter, underground locate, fault location and repair, running a service to a house and installing and testing meters. When I wasn't climbing I worked as a groundman for 2-3 climbers at a time. I also put in an 80 hour internship with AEP line crews for a real on the job experience. With AEP I had the opportunity to work from a bucket truck and operate a line truck, as well as work real storm damage repair. I greatly enjoy this work and look forward to doing it for the next 30+ years.
Very competitive 1.5 year program. Minimum 80% on every test otherwise you were removed from the program. Over 900 clinical hours and 350 hour internship. Successfully completed in November 2011. I maintained a full time work schedule while going through this program.
Lineman Apprentice. Stocking material and maintaining trucks Operating and driving bucket truck, digger derrick, track machine and backyard machine. Replacing broken poles, bad transformers, troubleshooting, repairing underground and overhead lines and all associated equipment. Replacing and installing streetlights, climbing inaccessible poles with gaffs and belt. Installing new poles, transformers and new customer services. Reconductoring and complete new construction, operating ropes and pulling machines. Participating in Storm restorations and customer outages. Completing AEP mandatory school and training in Ohio.
Work outside in all weather conditions. Read and record customer gas/electric usage. Inspect gas and electric meters for signs of damage, theft, gas leaks, and report findings to proper personnel. Inspect padmount transformers, locate new meters and properly input them into the handheld computer device, drive/walk to customer meters per day in all weather conditions, answer all customer questions, if not able refer them to someone who can, barricade/guard down wires in storm scenarios.

This is my Father's business. I began working for him at the age of 14. On Saturdays I would wake up at 5am, ride to work with him and work a 10-13 hour day doing whatever odd-jobs he could find for me, from stocking shelves to cleaning out sheds to helping my grandfather with maintenance.
