Work History
Registered Nurse, 02/2012 to 11/2014
Springlands Retirement Village Blenheim
I worked for this establishment for 3 years covering night duties in charge of 24 hospital level residents, villas, care studios and apartments. I was the only trained member of staff on duty, based in the hospital wing and had 3 health care assistants under my supervision. My key responsibilities included: Settling the clients for the night, ensuring they were comfortable and pain free and had access to their call bells, administration of medications and monitoring subcutaneous fluids and syringe drivers, regular repositioning and pressure area monitoring and restraint enabler monitoring. As with all aged care facilities clients would often fall, sometimes causing injuries to themselves. This involved accurate assessment, treatment and documentation and sometimes the need for hospitalisation. Office duties included: allocation of staff and organisation of client plans for the following day, assessment planning and evaluation of care plans and the addition of short term care plans as necessary and organisation and partial completion of necessary documents prior to GP visits. Sadly there were times a client would die and I would be directly responsible in their after care, including contacting the relatives, faxing the GP and pharmacy and completing the necessary legal documents. I am aware of the importance of following policies and procedures and adhering to the health and safety and infection control policies.
Registered Nurse, 01/2014 to Current
Medibank Health Solutions Wellington
I am sent referals through Medibank Health Solutions from insurance companies, to visit clients in their own homes and undertake a paramedical assessment for life insurance purposes. Once I recieve the referal, I have to contact the client within 24 hours and make an appointment to visit them at their convenience.
This includes taking bloods for health screening, full health questionnaire and vital signs recordings.
Registered Nurse, 01/2009 to 02/2012
After Hours GP Service Blenheim
I worked evening and weekend duties in a busy after hours GP service In this role I learnt to make quick and accurate assessments of incoming patients, including both physical and mental health conditions. Time management is crucial in this job.  I had to accurately assess and gather information so I could prioritize injuries based on medical need. Document of medical history was entered into the computer through Medtech software. I had to ascertain allergies and current medications ,obtain height, weight, body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure. Once the patient was seen by the doctor, I was given a treatment plan to follow. This included: splinting, bandaging, wound dressings, suturing, wax removal, vaccinations, health advice such as smoking cessation, inhaler techniques and general medical advice.
Registered Primary Health Nurse, 07/2010 to 03/2012
Lister Court Doctors Surgery Blenheim
I worked as a casual practice nurse for a group of doctors in a very busy GP surgery. During this time I became competent in the application of the following clinical skills: wound care, ear syringing, vaccinations, administration of medications, preparation and assistance with minor surgery, collection of specimens, venepuncture, vital sign monitoring, tympanography, plastering, ECG monitoring, teaching breast self examination, pregnancy testing and counselling, giving dietary advice, and health promotion. I provided consultations in nurse-led clinics including: well women, diabetes reviews, smoking cessation, health checks, cardio-vascular assessment and asthma advise. I realise how important it is to enhance a patients understanding of their health issues so that the best possible outcome can be achieved.
Registered Nurse- Emergency, 05/2006 to Current
Medimax Ambulance Services Nelson
For the past eight years, I have been working for Medimax, a Nelson based ambulance service. I have attended mainly motorcross events, but also dance parties, A & P shows, rodeos and  the national speedboat racing. I enjoy the variety and have dealt with many different types of injuries. I have had to learn to assess and plan patient care in often very difficult environments and conditions.  The most common injuries I have tended at the motorcross events are mainly head, fractures to the arms/legs and pelvic/abdominal injuries.  Part of my role is to organise transport for the patient from site, often via helicopter due to the rural location, but at the same time, care for the needs of the people close to the injured person in a sensitive and sympathetic manner. Nursing ‘in the field,' I am often first on the scene; this is where my experience is invaluable as the initial assessment, planning and implementation of care.
Skills and Abilities: -Advanced first aid skills- Excellent Communication Skills- Thorough attention to detail - Ability to work with a variety of people of diverse population - Manage sensitive and confidential information - Ability to take initiative and work with little or no supervision - Capacity to perform under pressure in high stress environment.
Registered Surgical Nurse, 04/2003 to 06/2004
Nelson Marlborough District Health Blenheim
This was my first nursing position in New Zealand. In a busy 36 bedded surgical ward caring for clients receiving a variety of both general elective and emergency surgical procedures. The nursing role included educating patients on surgical procedures. Providing preoperative, inter-operative and post operative care to patients. Managing pain and documenting patient's responses to nursing and other interventions. Discharging patients and organising follow up care. Maintaining patient's physical and psychosocial health. Monitoring safety and effectiveness of the environment and equipment.
