  • Among my coverage, I broke a story about the lobbying branch of the Catholic Church secretly fighting for legislation that would limit child molestation victims' ability to file lawsuits against sex offenders. It became a national news story, and the lobbying efforts failed.
  • My reporting on a principal who aggressively censored a high school newspaper was recognized by the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression for calling out efforts to restrict free expression.
  • I led the coverage of Albemarle County employees who were short-changed despite being offered compensation in exchange for retiring early. My coverage helped lead to an official's resignation and a successful class-action lawsuit by the employees.

  • Editor and professor for Virginia Commonwealth University's Capital News Service: As one of three editors/professors for the VCU Capital News Service in spring 2019, I've guided VCU's top student-journalists as they've written more than 270 articles on state government distributed throughout Virginia and published by news organizations that include The Washington Post, the Associated Press, USA Today and the Miami Herald. I've challenged student-journalists immensely as part of the university journalism capstone course. By wide accounts, our team of more than two dozen student-journalists were among the most influential leaders in state government news coverage this year, earning the Richmond First Club's 2019 Good Government Award, in recognition of CNS's in-depth policy reporting and breaking news coverage of scandals by three of Virginia's top government leaders this year.
  • VCU adjunct journalism professor: I've taught six 200- and 300-level journalism classes (August 2017 - present), teaching both the foundations of journalism reporting, writing and interviewing, as well as the intricate journalism practices of top-notch professionals. The lectures are based on real-world experience and input from some of the best journalists in the state, who have served as guest lecturers. Students get practical, real-world experience, practicing in-depth writing, interviewing, critical thinking, feature writing, breaking news reporting and multimedia reporting. They're challenged continuously and given thorough and frank feedback; many of my former students continue to call and text me regularly seeking journalism guidance, which I always help with. The courses have been intense, challenging and remarkably successful; in student course evaluations, 93 percent of students have rated me "very good" or "outstanding" -- the vast majority "outstanding."
  • Randolph-Macon College adjunct professor: I'm teaching an upper-level course (spring 2019) that I created for Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia called "The Art of the Interview," in which journalism students and other students enhance their interviewing skills. They're analyzing the techniques and strategies deployed by top-notch interviewers, from journalists to prosecutors, detectives and business employers. My contacts in the community have helped me secure top-of-the-line guest speakers, and the course has been extremely well-received, giving students hands-on experience that will give them a major edge in their professions.
  • Teaching Assistant & Assistant Bureau Chief for the Capital News Service at VCU in 2012. Provided story ideas to reporters, assisted with classroom instructions, edited articles and provided critiques.
  • Journalism Guest Lecturer at VCU on several occasions from 2013 to 2017, including for journalism professors June Nicholson, Vivian Medina-Messner, Jeff South, Sean Collins-Smith, and history professor Emilie Raymond. I also have served each of the past four years as a member of a panel of journalism professionals who review senior student-journalists' work at VCU, and for two years, I served as a judge for the Florida Press Association.
