2006 Toughest Placement of the Year

Palen Music Center Guitar, Rock Band Instructor | Columbia, MO | October 2004 - August 2006

Working at Palen was fantastic, and the relationship between the teachers and the staff was really conducive to teaching.  I considered most genuinely good friends, and taught several in advanced technique and theory.  In addition to the logistics of record-keeping and revenue-generating, I make a point to know my students and their families.  If they like and trust me, they buy into me as a teacher AND as a person.

Fall River Music/Rice Music Guitar Instructor (self-employed)/Sales Associate | Colorado Springs, CO | December 1996 - October 2004 Jean and Larry Rice gave me a chance to start teaching after my normal sales shift ended, and that quickly grew into a full-time position.  In the eight years I taught with Rice/FRM, I was able to build and maintain the second-largest student roster in Colorado Springs.  I attribute my initial success in teaching to some natural talent, an inviting personality, a great gig with an equally great local store, and all I learned and used while earning my BA.  With experience came the increased ability to relate to students in a way that engages, and a larger student base via referrals and word-of-mouth.  Many of my students became friends; I've eaten in their homes and played at their weddings.  They also became better musicians, because, while some never learned to read music, they loved playing.
Education
Master of Music Classical Guitar University of Missouri Columbia, MO | 2013 In addition to learning, articulating, and interpreting pieces from the Renaissance to the present, my instructor Anthony Glise and I delved into the instrument's history, and how best to express the style of each musical period.  I know I learned even more from Anthony simply because we related so well, something I'll make it a point to do with students.  I was part of the graduate guitar duo, as well as a founding member of MU's flagship, avant garde New Music Ensemble.
Master of Music Composition University of Missouri Columbia, MO | 2013 Under Drs. Tom McKenney and Stefan Freund, I was given not only the mechanics of composing for ensembles ranging from duo to orchestra, but also the guidance and creative freedom to discover a unique musical voice.   Both were equally ready to encourage sticking to my musical decisions, or to show me that a piece wasn't up to par.  Drs. McKenney and Freund taught me much about how to both give and receive the truth in a way that encourages interaction as opposed to the spewing of facts.
Master of Music Jazz Performance/Pedagogy University of Missouri Columbia, MO | 2013 As a student of the fantastic Dr. Arthur White, I remembered what it was like to discover new music; many classical musicians learned how to appreciate music through a different perspective, from him.  He treated each big band and small combo as a professional opportunity to learn.  Dr. White enthusiastically demanded excellence, and he wouldn't hesitate to hold individuals accountable.
