The crucial regulatory functions of miRNAs in multiple pathways involved in cardiovascular diseases have been well-studied. RUNX3 is a post-transcriptional factor that induces apoptosis in various cell lines. We hypothesized that miR-495 improves myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury by targeting RUNX3 and related regulatory pathways. Our data indicate that miR-495-targeted gene delivery improves myocardial remodeling and LV function post myocardial I/R injury. Specifically, miRNA-495 decreases RUNX3 expression as well as regulates key components of apoptosis to ameliorate myocardial I/R injury.
